The most desirable jobs in 2018, according to Tinder swipes

The most desirable jobs in 2018, according to Tinder swipesThe most desirable jobs in 2018, according to Tinder swipesOn a phone dating app like Tinder, your career ambitions get distilled down to the one or two-word bio you give on what you do for a living. Then, along with your picture and a brief bio, potential suitors are given a choice swipe left in rejection or swipe right in the hopes of making a match? The app relies on first impressions and according to a new Tinder list reported by Business Insider, there are some careers that are more immediately desirable than others when we are confronted between a CEO of life or someone flying through the skies.Nurses took the top spot for women interior designers for menAnalyzing the American user profiles that got the highest ratio of right swipes in 2018, Tinder compiled a list of the most swiped-right jobs. For U.S. women, suitors found medicine to be an attractive career.Nurses and dentists took the top spots, suggesting that paramo urs are seeking someone with a stable future. The healthcare industry is expected to grow 18% from 2016 to 2026, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics. In 2017, registered nurses were making an average of$70,000 a year while dentists were earning $158,120. Meanwhile, for men, suitors were attracted to men with a vision - for style or the skies. Interior designers and pilots scored the highest. Maybe we want someone to help us out on earning frequent flier miles? But while pilots remain consistently an attractive person to date, the idea of a self-made man working on an app is not as attractive anymore as it once was. Electronic Monitoring in the Workplace

Electronic Monitoring in the WorkplaceElectronic Monitoring in the WorkplaceYou may think no one will notice if you just take a few minutes out of your workday to play an angeschlossen game, check your social media accounts and emaille your friends. If you are using your office computer for those activities, theres a good mglichkeit your boss is well aware of what you are doing. According to the American Management Association, 66% of employers who responded to the organizations Electronic Monitoring and Surveillance Survey monitored their employees www connections in the workplace and their online activity even when they arent on the job. Electronic monitoring may take many forms, this survey showed. Many employers (45%) reported tracking content, keyboard strokes and time spent at the keyboard. Forty-three percent said they store and review computer files. Your online activities away from the workplace arent beyond your bosss scrutiny either. If you think its okay to post things ab out your company on blogs or social media, you should know thatsome companies troll the internet to see what their workers have to say about them. What are employers so worried about? Productivity, of course, is a big issue. If workers spend an excessive amount of time online, they are probably not doing their jobs. Thats not their only concern, however. Many say they conduct electronic monitoring because they are worried about lawsuits and security breaches. If you dont know if your boss is monitoring you, take a look at your company handbook. Is there a policy regarding internet and email use.If you work in Connecticut or Delaware, your employer has to let you know if they are using electronic monitoring. Although other states dont require this, many companies dont keep it a secret. Some, however, might. You are always better off if you simply assume your employer is watching you and avoid activities that can get you into trouble. Ask yourself if going online during the workday is more important than your job. Many employers, according to the survey, report firing workers for inappropriate internet use at work. Twenty-eight percent saidthey dismissed individuals for email misuse and 30% indicated theyfired workers for inappropriate use of the Internet. Be Wise When You Go Online Even if you are certain your boss isnt keeping on eye on your online activity, you should limit it.It isnt wise, nor is it productive, to spend a lot of time online while you are supposed to be working. If you look like you dont have enough to do, your boss will wonder why. Some jobs involve having a lot of downtime. While your presence is required, you may spend hours with little to do. Your boss may allow you, during those times, to partake in other activities as long as you are ready to work when needed. He may even let you spend some of that quiet time online. Here is when good judgment is essential. Dont think that having your bosss permission to spend time online means you can do whatever you want, visit whatever sites you want, and email to whomever and about whatever you want. Certain activities are off limits. Are there places out in the real world where you would feel uncomfortable running into your boss? Then you should stay away from those types of establishments in the online world as well. You may be able to travel around the web anonymously by activating the privacy mode on your browser or clearing the history, but your company may still be able to track your movements. Lets not forget the number of employers who admitted to doing electronic monitoring of workers online activity.Imagine how embarrassing it would be if you got caught in, lets say, a compromising position. While you are free to use the internet however you wish on your own time, you should still avoid doing certain things. As mentioned earlier in this article, some employers keep an eye on social media and blogs to see if anyone is talking about them. Dont say anything negative about the company, your boss or your coworkers. Never reveal any company secrets. The Electronic Monitoring and Surveillance Survey showed there is a high likelihood that your employer is keeping a close eye on your online activity. Thats a compelling reason to be prudent about what you do online while in the workplace and outside of it.

How Not to Freak Out When You Meet Someone You Admire

How Not to Freak Out When You Meet Someone You AdmireHow Not to Freak Out When You Meet Someone You AdmireWhen I welches in college, I met David Sedaris. I was 21, I had just read Naked, and as an aspiring writer who dreamed to cultivate Sedaris gift, I was a little overzealous, to put it mildly. He held a book reading at an intimate setting in New Hampshire, far from the huge venues you can find him in these days, and afterward he was easily approachable. So, I headed toward him with both glee and hesitation, trying to contain my enthusiasm. But when he stood before me, I fell into fan-girl mode.I love you I exclaimed maniacally, on the verge of tears. I really, really love you, and I want to be just like you when I grow up Thankfully, he was kind, we spoke for a few minutes, and he signed my book with, I look forward to reading yur book. That was the first and last time I met someone I truly, wholeheartedly admired. Since then, I always swore Id be far more cool if the opportunity to meet another one of my heroes arose. (Im still preparing- lying in wait like a lioness.)At some point in your professional life, you, too, will probably groe nachfrage into someone you admire, and when that day comes, its important to be prepared and relaxed. The first feat is reminding yourself that this partie is not some celestial creature beamed down from the heavens, but someone actually very human, just like you. After that, its all about breathing and keeping your inner fanatic under wraps. Just remember these dos and donts.DosBreatheBreathing is really important Not only does it keep you alive (obviously), but calm and evenly paced breaths will take your nerves down several notches.Keep Your Body Language in CheckSee that person youre dying to talk to at a convention? Are you waving as if youre best friends? Stop. It. Now. Theres nothing worse than acting overly familiar with someone whom youve never met. Youll look like a psycho, realize it, and then likely freak out, brea k a sweat, trip, stutter, and end up in the corner with your face in your palm.Related Whats Your Body Language Saying?Proceed With Grace and CautionIts important to read the person with whom youd like to speak. Does she look like shes in the mood to talk to a stranger? Is he already overwhelmed by dozens of equally excited admirers? Is it possible to get a cupcake on the way there? These are important things to consider before making your way to the person and letting the compliments roll.Admire Like an AdultOnce youre front and center, its time to shine. Take the heartfelt, honest approach in the way you compliment this person. Have you admired him since you were a little girl? Are you the woman you are today because of the life-long inspiration of this particular person? Would you love to set up a meeting to pick her brain, or are you just there to say thank you? (Yes, thank you, when you meet someone you admire is always a great gesture.)Related Caught in an Elevator With a CEO? 3 Conversation StartersPut a 3-Minute Cap on ItKeep in mind that youre probably not the only one in the room dying to talk to this person. Instead of hogging up whatever limited time he or she has, keep your spiel of admiration to no longer than three minutes. (Ideally, between one and two.)DontsHug Them Yes, it might be your first instinct to hug this person, because you think you know him or her so well, but hold the phones How would you feel if someone, even if this person thought you were the bees knees, came running up to you to hug you, all while going on and on about how awesome you are? You wouldnt like it either. Keep it simple, and keep it to a handshake.RelatedLets Get Physical The Rules of Touch at WorkGushTelling someone you admire that you want to run away with her and start a new society of people on an island somewhere, even if youre joking, is just asking for trouble. Not only do you come off as insane, but youre playing with your professional reputation. Its hard to take people seriously when theyre throwing out marriage proposals to strangers. The same goes for squealing Dont do it.Take a Photo Without PermissionSometimes when we meet a person we admire, our brain immediately goes to just how were going to savor this moment forever and ever. And now that everyone has a built-in phone camera, its kind of hard not to indulge in the immediate urge to take a photo of, well, everyone. However, do yourself and especially the person in question a favor, and dont. If you feel you cant live your life without a photo of you two together, then ask politely. Should he or she say no, dont argue, haggle, or mope. Not everyone wants to pose for pictures.Be a Jerk on Social MediaLets say that the person youve met not only doesnt want to be photographed, but also comes off like a real SOB. Does this give you permission to take to social media to do the same? Not really. Sure, youre free to voice your disappointment, but why bother? In cases like this, its i mportant to take the high road. Theres no telling how and why people react the way they do sometimes, so its not your place to pass judgement, especially on a public forum.Sweat ItWhether the person you admire was horrifically rude or you stumbled over your own words and felt foolish, let it go. We come into contact with thousands of people in our lives, so the likelihood of your foul-up being remembered probably isnt at the top of the list of things that will come to mind later on.When dealing with the emotions and mindset that come with meeting someone you admire, nothing quells any possible impending drama like breathing and reminding yourself that were all human. While its likely to be pretty tricky to keep your cool should the time come, if you can remember to not hyperventilate and realize that no one is better or above anyone else, then youre halfway there. The rest will fall into place.Especially if you steer away from marriage proposals.Photo courtesy ofMichael Woodruff/ Sh utterstock.

5 Management Systems Critical to Employee Performance

5 Management Systems Critical to Employee Performance5 Management Systems Critical to Employee PerformanceManagers perennially ask why employees dont do what they are supposed to do. While part of the responsibility falls on choices individual employees make, managers need to shoulder part of the blame, too. Managers and the management systems they create are commonly responsible when employees dont do what you want them to do. Employees want to succeed at work. You dont know a single person who gets up in the morning and says, Gee, I think Ill go to work and fail today. Employees often fail because of a failure in your employee management systems. To determine why an employees is failing at a task or why their goals landseem unachievable, you need to ask the question that Dr. W. Edwards Deming (the father of the U.S. quality movement) traditionally asked What about the work system is causing the employee to fail? An examination of the work systems usually yields important answers he was wont to say in his lectures to managers. Why Dont Employees Do What You Want Them to Do? Internationally known consultant, speaker, and former professor at Columbia Universitys Graduate School of Business, Ferdinand Fournies, in his landmark book, Why Employees Dont Do What Theyre Supposed to Do and What to Do About It, says that one reason is that employees dont know what they are supposed to do. Managers play an essential role in helping employees know what they are supposed to do. 5 Critical Management Systems Managers do this by creating effective management systems. They help employees by developing and using these five critical management systems. Management Systems Goal Setting and Employee Involvement As a manager, youll want to design your employee management system of goal setting and employee involvement to enable employees to succeed. Help to establish overall goals for your department and work unit. Take ownership of the goals that the company requires you to meet and the goals that you can subjectively set, in addition.Communicate the goals of the work unit or enable employees to participate in setting the goals, to develop more employee ownership of the goals.Involve employees in determining how they will go about achieving the goals.Help employees know what to measure and how to measure so that they can see that they are making progress in meeting the goals. Management Systems ermchtigung Delegate projects and other activities to help employees meet department goals by using effective management system delegation methods. Assist the employee to make an overall work plan with dates and a timeline for when key deliverables are due for review.Share any preconceived pictures you may have of what you want the outcome or deliverables to look like so that you and the employee share meaning.Establish the criteria for success. Youll want to create the opportunity for a celebration.Meet with the employee at designated due dates to assess pr ogress and roadblocks encountered. You dont want to be blindsided- and the employee doesnt want to be either- if a deadline or step is missed. Management Systems Training, Education, and Development Training plays a role in employees knowing what they are supposed to do. They need the skills and tools essential for them to succeed in their jobs. As a manager, you bear a lot of the responsibility to ensure that your reporting employees are given the opportunity to develop the skills they need to succeed. Keep commitments about employee developmental opportunities written in the performance development plan. (The ability to grow and develop their skills is crucial toemployee motivation and success).Coach employee skill development daily and in their one-on-one, weekly meetings with you. Management Systems Recognition and Reward Recognition is the most powerfulform of employee feedback. Timely, appropriate recognition to an employee is feedback that reinforces actions you want to see m ore of from the employee. If the employee is informed, through timely, specific recognition, of the types of actions you want to see, the employee is likely to repeat them. Provide recognition that is timely, and that reinforces employee learning and goal accomplishment.Recognize employees for doing what you want them to do. In a mid-sized company, semi-annualemployee satisfaction surveysare conducted. The Culture and Communications gruppe was not satisfied with the amount of specific information received in response to the question, How does the company make you feel that it is genuinely interested in employee well-being? The committee devised a second questionnaire and discovered that the number one factor that affected whether employees felt genuinely cared about by the company, was positive, personal interaction time with their supervisor. Pretty powerful. finding, wouldnt you say? Do you have these management systems in place? Are employees still acting as if they dont know wha t you want them to do? Signs That Employees Dont Know What You Want Them to Do Signs that your employees still dont know what you want them to do include assignments that are not completed on timeprocrastination on projectserrors and mistakesa focus on non-essential, busy workunsatisfactory amounts of outputoutcomes that dont capitalize on the potential for successunwillingness to ask for helpexcuses and failure to take responsibility andfailure to provide you with timely feedback. If you see these signs from your employees, you need to reinforce the above described five management systems to see what you need to add to make them more effective. Your employees are not stupid they are not uncaring they are not unmotivated. They just dont know what you want them to do.

You certainly dont want to fall behind or look bad compared to your coworkers who are laboring late into the night, and you definitely wantyour boss to binnensee you as a hard-working team player. However, ahealthy personal life is just as important to your overall well-being as a successful professional life is. Furthermore, finding a consistent way to leave the office on time can actually combat burnout, give you more time to recharge, and make you more productive when you return to work the next day. The Supreme Court case that could prevent 25 million workers from suing their employers

The Supreme Court case that could prevent 25 million workers from suing their employersThe Supreme Court case that could prevent 25 million workers from suing their employersOn Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court began hearing oral arguments on three consolidated cases deciding your rights to sue your employer in court. The court is debating whether arbitration clauses that forfeit your right to band together with other employees and pursue class-action claims against your employer - clauses that employers are increasingly writing into employees contracts - are illegal. If the lawyers representing employers have their way, companies would be allowed to continue writing employment contracts that force workers into less costly individual arbitration agreements if employees want to raise the alarm and pursue legal action against wrongful treatment and toxic workplaces.Lawyers for the workers argued that contracts that deny employees the right to class-action lawsuits could violate a differe nt federal labor law. Lawyers representing employees said that the National Labor Relations Act makes it illegal for any contract to deny employees the rights to engage in concerted activities for mutual aid and protection. The ideologically-split justices were divided on whether arbitration clauses with class-action waivers in employment contracts are illegal.Justice Stephen Breyer noted that a ruling against the workers would endanger the entire heart of the New Deal, while Justice Kennedy noted that even if the justices sided with employers, employees could still individually go to the same lawyer, which would give employees many of the advantages of collective action. But for Justice Ginsberg, individual action is not enough. She noted that individual claims are so costly for employees that the legal bills would outweigh the potential settlements. Thats why this is truly a situation where there is strength in numbers, Ginsburg said. Why arbitration is a bad deal for employeesThe co urts decision would affect 25 million employment contracts, according to the Economic Policy Institute.More than half of private, non-unionized workplaces have mandatory arbitration practices, according to a new study. That means that 60 million Americans are giving up their right to go to court to protect their legal employment rights. Its often not much of a choice of whether you want to give up this right. To get the job, employees are often required to sign arbitration clauses in their employment contracts. But these clauses matter later when employees seek justice for a companys wrongdoing. When you want to take your case to court as an employee, the deck is stacked against you. Results show that when cases go to arbitration, companies usually get their way. Between 2010 and 2014, companies sought to push 1,179 class actions into arbitration, and judges overwhelmingly ruled in their favor in four out of every five cases, according to the New York Times. The court is expected to re ach a decision by June, according to Reuters.

Missing Work Excuse Email and Letter Examples

Missing Work Excuse Email and Letter ExamplesMissing Work Excuse Email and Letter ExamplesWhen youre required to formally notify your employer in writing when you have either missed work, wont be able to come to work, or would like to take a day off, its important to write a professional emaille homilie or letter with the basic details of why you were or will be absent. Even if youre not required to provide a formal excuse, its a good idea to send a short email to explain your absence. When Employers Require Excuses Companies may require that employees provide a written letter of excuse or send an email message when they miss time from work for doctors appointments or for other reasons. In addition, you may need to request a formal leave of absence in writing. If youre taking a personal day off, you may be required to request that in writing as well. If youre sending an email to say you wont be in the office today, a brief message should be sufficient to provide your boss with ap propriate notice. If yourerequesting a leave of absenceor other extended time off, however, you will need to provide mora detailed information in your request. When to Send Your Message Send your message as soon as you know that you will need time away from work. The more advance notice you can provide, the easier it will be for the company to arrange to cover your workload and the more amenable they will be to granting your request. These sample letters and email messages with excuses for missing work can and should be edited to fit your own personal circumstances you shouldnt simply copy-and-paste them. Also see below for tips on what - and what not - to include in your request for a leave of absence letter. Keep your message as simple as possible, but include basic information regarding why you werent at work, and when you will return. Sample Email Excuse Subject Absence From Work - Your NameDear Mr./Mrs. Lastname,Im writing to inform you that I was absent from work on February 4th, 20XX due to illness. I was unable to report to work that day because I had to go to the urgent care clinic. I was treated and told to go home and rest for the remainder of the day. Please let me know if you need more information and thank you for understanding.Sincerely,Your Name Expand What to Include in a Personal Day Off Letter When youre requesting a personal day off from work, you dont need to provide a reason. Simply request the time off, giving as much notice as possible. Whenever possible, try to sc hedule days off when you know the office will be covered and there arent urgent deadlines to me. Personal Day Email Request Subject Personal Day - Your NameDear Mr./Mrs. Lastname,Id like to take a personal day off from work on Monday, July 22.Please let me know if thats convenient, and I appreciate your consideration. Thank youSincerely,Your Name Expand Sample Letters Requesting a Leave of Absence from Work Formal Leave of Absence LetterLeave of Absence LetterSample Absence Letter - Military Leave What to Include in a Request for a Leave of Absence Letter If you find that you need a leave of absence, your employer will expect you to explain why this is so necessary for you. Your absence will both inconvenience them and will perhaps cost them time or money as well if they are forced to find a temporary replacement for you. Your letter should thus include an adequate reason for your request, supported by the following logistical details The date(s) you wont be available to work .The date you will return to work, if you know it.An offer to help while youre out of the office, if thats feasible. An offer to complete all outstanding projects / client work before your leave begins, if time allows. An offer to provide documentation if you are requesting a medical or a military leave of absence. The email and / or phone number where your employer can contact you if they have a question.Any other additional information required by the company if they have a formal policy to request sick time or leave from your job. What Not to Include in an Excuse or Leave Request Letter Think carefully about how much personal information you want to share with your employer regarding your excuse or request for a leave of absence. You dont want for them to think that you are prevaricating or that your absence may be paving the way for a permanent departure. Either suspicion might lead to their firing you, especially if you work in a position where job security is not guaranteed and where there are others who would readily fill your shoes. The Bottom Line Dont include too much information. You dont need to provide all of the details of a medical problem or a personal crisis. Keep your letter short and simple.Dont make something up or include any information that cant be verified. Stick to the facts because your employer may ask for a note from your doctor to substantiate your request.Do keep it simple. Provide the information your employer requires, but keep your email or letter short and simple.

5 Illegal Interview Questions and How to Answer Them

5 Illegal Interview Questions and How to Answer Them 5 Illegal Interview Questions and How to Answer Them 56The questions are fairly common, but the answers are anything but easy. What year were you born? Are you married? Are you planning to have a family? Where are you from? Why do employers ask illegal interview questions? As a job seeker, how are you supposed to handle it? Let’s start with why these questions shouldn’t be asked. Employers are not allowed to make hiring decisions based on factors such as race, color, sex, religion, national origin, birthplace, age, disability, or marital status. These characteristics are protected under the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. If a company is asking for any of this information, it could be perceived that the answers are playing a part in the hiring decisions. Sometimes, there is something legitimate the interviewer is trying to find out- they are just asking it in a really wrong way! Here are five commonly asked illegal interview questions and how to respond: Have you ever been arrested? While an arrest record can’t be held against a person, convictions can be. Answer by clarifying that you have never been convicted of a crime. Do you go to church on Sundays? Assuming it is being asked of every candidate, it is okay to ask about weekend availability if it is a requirement of the job. A good response would be, “I can work weekends if needed” or “I am available for some weekend shifts, but would love some flexibility in the schedule for other commitments.” Is English your first language? While your language skills may very well be pertinent to the position, this question speaks to a person’s nationality- that’s a no-no. Give the interviewer a rundown of all the languages that you speak, write, and/or read fluently. I noticed you limping a bit when you came in. Is everything okay? The interviewer may be trying to express a genuine concern for your well-being, but unfortunately this question could speak to a disability. Feel free to respond with something along the lines of, “Thanks for asking. It’s nothing that impacts my ability to do the job!” Are you planning on starting a family? Chances are this question is asked to determine how your future plans will impact your commitment to the job and your career. Problem #1: It’s almost always asked of women- not men. Problem #2: It’s too easy for a company to at least partially make a decision on a candidate based on the response given. A great answer to this would be, “I’m not there yet. I am interested in the possibility for growth and career development with the company. Can you tell me about it?” By trying to determine what the interviewer is trying to discern from their question, you should be able to give them the information without letting them step over a line. Asking thoughtful questions during the interview is a great way to steer the conversation back to the business at hand. What inappropriate questions have you encountered in interviews? How did you respond?

Gap Year and Your Career Take Some Time and Get Ahead

Gap Year and Your Career Take Some Time and Get Ahead Gap Year and Your Career Take Some Time and Get Ahead One month shy of graduation, I was reflecting on the end of my academic life, and the beginning of my actual career, and I came to a serious realization I had no idea what I really wanted to do. I had invested four years into a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Business Administration at the University of Southern California, and in spite of all the knowledge I had gained, I hadn’t had the foresight to truly plan out my next steps. I was always so busy enjoying every second of the “best four years of my life” that I hadn’t taken the time to think about what I wanted to do for the next forty. This was a bit of a problem. What to do? That’s when I made a decision, on a whim, which I now consider one of the best choices I’ve ever made: I took a year off (a “gap year”). While all my peers were jumping straight into the hustle and bustle of corporate America, I did exactly the opposite. First I took a three-month trip up to Canada to work as a tree planter (a manual labor job where you live in a tent in the woods and plant tree saplings for nine hours a day), and then I took all the money I made and spent it on a seven month adventure through South East Asia. Which, up to this point, is one of the highlights of my life. Looking back, it’s amazing that so many of my friends thought that taking a year off to travel was a horrible decision. “Justin, think about your career! How do you expect to make up all that lost time?” However, what’s a year? Many people end up, for various reasons, unemployed for some stretches over the course of a career. So, while my peers were collecting a year of work experience that will ultimately blend into an expectantly homogenous forty-year career, I was collecting unforgettable, once-in-a-lifetime experiences. The truth is, after it was all said and done, I hadn’t lost anything because I spent a year gaining valuable experience an experience that made me even more employable when I did enter the job market.   Below I’ve illustrated why taking a year off to see the world will actually enhance your career, and not hinder it. Perhaps a gap year is also right for you! Gain a Broader Perspective One thing that every person should experience in his or her life is a cultural shock or the experience of total confusion at a societal norm that completely challenges the norms of your daily life. After seven months in Southeast Asia, I saw a plethora of things that I couldn’t have ever imagined as a college graduate from California.   After experiencing culture shock, you start to realize your preconceived notions of normalcy are not all fair or correct, and that beliefs you thought were undeniable truths are actually just social constructs. This consciousness generates an open-mindedness that is more accepting of different perspectives. This is an invaluable tool at the start of your career. This experience will give you an edge in any interview. Interact with People Who Have Different Perspectives and Personalities While in Southeast Asia I spent the majority of my time traveling with Western Europeans. Meeting hundreds of people from different backgrounds meant that I met people with hundreds of different perspectives, who came from a variety of unique cultures. Learning how to interact with people who have a multitude of viewpoints is definitely a perk when entering a professional environment. I knew how to navigate the complexities (and difficulties) that can arise when people have very different values, cultures, norms, and perspectives.   Travel is similar to the workplace in that you don’t have control over the people you interact with, and you need some degree of cooperation between the parties. Unless you are at the top of a business hierarchy, chances are you will have zero input in deciding whom you work with; it is important to understand and respect our work peers and to be able to see things from their perspective (even if we don’t agree). Traveling was, in hindsight, intense training for me, and it would have likely taken many years to get that same experience if I’d gone straight from university to a job. It is important to learn how to cooperate with people possessing differing perspectives and personalities. Build Confidence Problem-Solving Skills I was absolutely terrified before I got on the plane to Southeast Asia. I had never traveled alone, and it was my first trip to a country where I did not speak the language.   I was so nervous about my trip that the thought of canceling it had, indeed, crossed my mind in the weeks prior to leaving. However, navigating new cultures gave me a lot of time to practice creative problem-solving skills! Now, on the other side of the experience, I realize my fears were normal since I was so green back then; it was definitely a personal growth experience. Today, I am a confident traveler, and I know that I could go anywhere on earth, and be completely capable. As a result, I have new aspirations for the future, and have considered jobs in Hong Kong or Singapore   the world is my oyster. This confidence is quite useful in your career. The process of moving from one company to another is very similar to the experience of traveling to a new country. Often, the nervousness associated with switching companies is rooted in the fear of the unknown. Although it is surely possible to glean information about corporate culture from the interview process, the intangible experience of working at a company is something that cannot be described, only experienced. Being confident that you can thrive in any climate will quell your fears and allow you to be more open to new opportunities. Gain a Unique Experience to Discuss with Employers An interview is not just a test of your skills, but it is also an assessment of whether or not you will fit into the organization’s corporate culture. An interview is a perfect time to share your travel story (or stories!). Not only does it act as an icebreaker, but it also shows the interviewer that you have the skills and personal assets discussed above: you have a broad cultural view, the ability to interact with multiple personality types, problem-solving skills, and you exude self-confidence. Furthermore, it gives you an easy, non-polarizing topic to discuss with your interviewer. Find Clarity Define Goals Lots of people graduate from college and still don’t know exactly what they want to do when they grow up. This is another instance when a gap year can be extremely helpful. Taking a break from the hustle and bustle of academia and the working world can be a great way to clear your mind, and decide exactly what career to pursue. I met plenty of people in Southeast Asia who were teaching English abroad as a way to test out whether or not they really wanted to teach full-time. I also met people who were working at hostels or for travel companies, and at the same time, they were actively determining if hospitality was the field for them. My favorite travel buddy even found a couple of acting gigs in Australia, so you never know what opportunities will become available to you! Even if none of these work opportunities end up being your dream career, it broadens your range of experiences and gives you the ability to make an informed decision when you return home. In the end, taking a year off to travel was one of the very best decisions I’ve ever made, no doubt. Not only was it a ton of fun, but it was in no way a sacrifice. One year in the grand scheme of things is a tiny amount of time, and it gave me a career-long edge over typical candidates. I’ve tried to convince everyone I talk to that they should take some time off to go traveling, see the world, and broaden their horizons. Most importantly, the amazing and unique experiences you have are simply impossible to replicate at home. How did a gap year benefit your career? Share with us in the comments!

Why I Choose to Integrate Work and Life, Not Balance It

Why I Choose to Integrate Work and Life, Not Balance It Why I Choose to Integrate Work and Life, Not Balance It There’s a lot of talk about work-life balance these days, most of which revolves around the fact that it’s not working. “The idea is that you can compartmentalize everything into either ‘work’ activities … or ‘life’ activities … and by doing so ‘have it all.’ In practice, though, this theory falls apart,” writes Forbes contributor Kevin Harrington recently. “[T]he idea that there is a perfect balance is a red herring. For most people work and life are practically inseparable,” adds Lazlo Bock of Harvard Business Review ®. Perhaps HBR’s Stewart D. Friedman says it best: “[Balance] assumes we must always make trade-offs … among the four main aspects of our lives: work or school, home or family (however you define that), community (friends, neighbors, religious or social groups), and self (mind, body, spirit). A more realistic and more gratifying goal is better integration between work and the rest of life.” As a startup founder- a role in which work never fits into the traditional 9-to-5 hours and can certainly take over all aspects of the rest of life if I let it- I’m a big proponent of work-life integration. I also encourage all of my employees at The Muse to live the same way. While we do have an unlimited vacation policy and flexible hours that let people enjoy their time out of work, we also find ways to help people integrate non-work activities into their jobs (think installing a bar in our office for Friday happy hours and letting team members take workcations). There are plenty of studies that show the benefits of work-life integration policies on engagement and employee morale, and we’ve seen firsthand that it makes us a happier, more productive team. It also makes me a happier, more productive professional. And in the spirit of integrating work and life- versus just balancing them- here are a few other strategies I’ve implemented in my own schedule. 1. Find the Schedule That Lets You Work Best Traditionally, work was for Monday through Friday, 9ish to 6ish (or, you know, 9ish), and life would fit in the rest of the time. And while closing the workday may work for some, I find that I’m more effective when I insert non-work activities into my day. For example, my brain shuts off temporarily around 7 PM, no matter what I’ve been doing (or how much work I have left). So, I often take the opportunity to grab dinner with friends before getting back online later that night to finish up any loose ends. Yes, I’m working late, but it’s from the comfort of my couch and in my pajamas- and after I’ve had some time to unwind and relax. Ultimately, it’s all about finding what works for you. Would you love to have a long run in the morning? Or take a long, leisurely lunch? Try it out, and see how it impacts your productivity. 2. Rethink the Weekend Along similar lines, balancing work and life might look like working hard all week, and playing hard on the weekends. I find, though, if I sign off all weekend, I spend Sunday dreading Monday morning (and Monday through Wednesday running around like a crazy person). So, I like to set aside a couple of blocks of time during the weekend for focused work (and inbox clearing- no one else is online to fill it back up!)- and it makes for a much less stressful week all around. (Note: To make sure this doesn’t, in fact, take over your weekend, set aside one block of time for focused work or one project to complete. Then, stop.) 3. Make Co-workers Your Friends Here’s my favorite tip: Instead of relegating professional contacts and friends to two separate buckets in your life, find ways to combine them. I'm fortunate enough to have a number of people I would consider both professional contacts and personal friends, and being able to integrate those two parts of my life sometimes lets me feel like I'm having more of both. For example, I can catch up with a contact at a major national media property who syndicates Muse content to her audience of millions, and swap stories about our weekends or lives outside of work as well. I have a number of entrepreneur friends who I can call if I need advice on a tricky issue- or want to grab a drink after work and unwind. Finding co-workers, professional contacts, and others in my field who I genuinely like has made integrating work and play much easier when things get busy. What works for me might not work for you, but that’s the beauty of the work-life integration conversation. It’s finding ways to work and live better, however you define it. Tell us! How have you found ways to integrate work and life? Disclosure: This post was written as part of the University of Phoenix Versus Program. How to overcome the Monday morning slump

How to overcome the Monday morning slump How to overcome the Monday morning slump The numbers are staggering: about  70% of American workers are not engaged and dread Monday mornings, according to an annual poll by the Gallup organization. Many are quick to blame their organization, the working conditions, or their  industry. Many think: “If only I worked for the next Google, that would be exciting.”But if it were that easy, then why were highly compensated key executives recently bolting from Uber like the building was  on fire?In fact, the leader is often at the center of this problem, and here’s why: people often become demoralized when they conclude that they are showing up on Monday morning in order to enrich and empower the executives.Consider this simple test: would the average American worker rather work toward a cause or toward the  enrichment of their boss? That’s a no-brainer.Sadly, it seems that many of  America’s leaders think that their mere title and position of power, by itself, is sufficient to earn the following of those in their charge. These leaders think nothing of behaving in ways that signal to their employees that the success of the organization hinges on the leader’s  brilliance and raw managerial capacity.Think of those organizations that operate under the name of the founder  or those where the CEO pays himself or herself two, three or, in some cases, more than  10 times more than the others on their team. Think about those meetings where the leader stands in front of the room and dominates the conversation. While there are successful organizations that operate under this brand of leadership, these leaders run the risk of communicating to their employees that they don’t matter, or worse, that they show up every Monday morning just to enrich the person  whose name is on the top of the building. Talk about deflating! There’s a common theme among organizations that are able to build a culture of impassioned employees: the leaders adopt behaviors that communicate that they were more, or at least equally, co mmitted to the mission of the company, as compared to their own selfish interests. These leaders actively seek to fuse their employees together in service of a shared mission or a common cause. Most of us are quick to assert our place on the “right” side of this selfish-ego vs. collective ego dilemma. Yet, when pressed, results show that few leaders take the time to carefully think this through. So what can we do?Communicating your commitment to the mission requires a vigilant, conscious awareness of the message you are delivering with each of the daily decisions that tempt your selfish interests.Ask yourself: Who do you prioritize on your calendar?  How much time do you invest with your front line workers? When you conduct a meeting, who emerges as the smartest person in the room? Whose job is it to step-up and serve that particularly challenging customer? When crisis strikes, who takes ownership?Truly successful leaders learn how to shift their conscious focus and embrace the sel fish-ego vs. collective-ego dilemma, recognizing that employee engagement is earned one decision at a time.Darrell Cavens, founder and CEO of Zulily, said he experienced difficult personal growth as he grew to understand his early career approach to conducting meetings. General Robert Van Antwerp, former chief engineer of the Army Corps of Engineers, didn’t discover one of his most effective leadership tools until challenged by the stress and heat of the Saudi desert and Operation Desert Storm. These and other iconic national leaders demonstrate that the best technique to diminish the Monday morning slump begins with connecting their workers to the mission  and communicating through their daily actions where they prioritize their self-interests relative to the organization’s mission.Dudley Slater, the co-founder and former  CEO of Integra Telecom, is the author, with Steven T. Taylor,  of Fusion Leadership: Unleashing the Movement of Monday Morning Enthusiasts.

Follow these 7 steps to grow as a purpose-driven leader

Follow these 7 steps to grow as a purpose-driven leader Follow these 7 steps to grow as a purpose-driven leader According to Google, there are 208,000,000 articles on how to grow as a leader. This isn’t one of those articles. Rather, it’s a mini-guide complete with plenty of research and resources to help you take practical steps to develop your leadership skills. What is purpose-driven leadership?Purpose-driven leaders tap into the intrinsic motivations inside themselves and those around them. According to ground-breaking research from Imperative, purpose-driven leaders are the most effective at advancing their own careers while making the world better. They also inspire their teams to achieve extraordinary results for reasons other than money. As our global economy shifts towards a more inclusive model that is not destroying the planet, purpose-driven leaders are the ones creating more responsible businesses and products, and mobilizing the best employees to contribute towards something greater than profits.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happi ness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! And the demand for purpose-driven leaders is growing, because it’s good for business, too. According to a report from EY on this very topic, “…getting purpose right builds organizational resilience and, crucially, improves long-term financial performance”.So even companies behind the curve on sustainability initiatives are now realizing that they need purpose-driven leaders more than ever before. So what does the research say about how you can actually grow as a purpose-driven leader? The research is pretty clear on this topic: If you want to grow as an empathetic and purpose-driven leader, you need experience leading. Period. But not all experiences are created equal: in fact, it’s less about the type of leadership experience you get and more about what you do during your experience that helps you grow as a leader.Follow these 7 steps, inspired by transformative learning processes, to help you grow into the purpose -driven leader you’re capable of being:Step #1: Set goals, write them down, and tell a friendDon’t skip step #1! In fact, the best leaders over-invest in this stage. Write down your goals using a SMART format. Once you’ve got your main goals, copy them onto a sticky note and place it somewhere you’ll see it often. Then, tell a friend and/or mentor about your goals. Simply doing both of these steps will increase the likelihood that you will achieve those goals (research proves it).Step #2: Better understand yourselfMost people don’t know their own leadership style nearly as well as they might think. If you’re going to grow as a leader, you first have to know where to grow from. These 3 simple steps will help: Talk to your friends and colleagues and ask them for honest responses to three questions, known as the stop, keep, start method: What are the leadership qualities you should stop exhibiting, keep exhibiting, and start exhibiting? Understand your purpose drivers and what motivates you to lead. The Purpose Economy and Imperative Assessment can help you understand this better. As a primer, read Imperative’s Purpose-Driven Leadership eBook. Think about the work you do that actually makes you come alive. Dan Pink’s video presentation about motivation and book about Drive will add a lot of clarity to your search. Step #3: Build on your strengthsGrowing as a leader is hard work, and it’ll take a lot of hard work to get there. You’ll expose yourself to lots of questions, self-doubt, and even isolation. That’s why it’s important to build your leadership style on your strengths. How? I recommend reading about Strengths Based Leadership after taking StrengthsFinder. Figure out the type of leadership strengths you already have, and build on those. After deciding on this and getting your baseline, you might want to go back to Step #1 to check-in on your goals and update them as needed.Step #4: Learn new conceptsThe more you lead, the less technical know-how you need. Instead, you need to get better at using frameworks that help other peoplesucceed and make a lasting impact. For this, there is no better framework than design thinking with a human-centered lens. Improving your ability to empathize, understand problems, be creative, develop lean solutions, and then test learn is essential to b eing effective as a leader. Leaders don’t provide tactical solutions, but rather they improve the processes and systems that enable their teams to be effective and develop their own solutions. In addition, improving your people skills through exercises like peer-based coaching and empathy-building is essential.Step #5: Get a stretch experienceThis step is actually the keystone of your growth. If you want to lead at the next level, you have to get practice leading at the next level. As we published in Harvard Business Review, social impact experiences offer an incredible opportunity to stretch yourself to learn and grow. But a word of caution here: Remember that any experience is better than no experience. Don’t stress about finding the perfect opportunity or delay finding an opportunity in search of something perfect. Any stretch experience will help you learn and grow, but it is worth taking the time to try and align your experience in a way that builds on your strengths, while still stretching you to grow.Step #5: Get a stretch experienceThis step is actually the keystone of your growth. To truly grow, you’ll need to be part of the 1% that doesn’t. Reflection is actually where future behavior change happens. The science behind this is fascinating. Practice and reflection help build and strengthen neural networks in your brain, which enables you to actually develop your skills and change your behavior. At MovingWorlds, we teach a framework we call Think Back, Think Through, Think Forward to reflect on your experiences in a way that helps you understand the way you acted, decide on what you should have done, and then plan ahead for how you’ll act next time.Step #7: Record your learning and teach-backTo teach is to learn twice. Find some way to teach others what you have learned. This can be done through a blog post, your own portfolio website, a presentation at a local event, or by transferring these very skills to groups that you volunteer with or mentor. We always recommend that every participant in our leadership development programs keeps a consistent personal journal as well as a public-facing blog to document their experience. And while it’s never easy to condense all your learning into a short-form p ost, going through the process of condensing something into a short presentation will help you better understand what’s most important, yourself, and what steps you should take next. This article first appeared on Kununu.

Before You Design for Additive Manufacturing Check Your Mindset

Before You Design for Additive Manufacturing Check Your Mindset Before You Design for Additive Manufacturing Check Your Mindset Before You Design for Additive Manufacturing, Check Your Mindset Content provided by PTC Additive manufacturing (AM) promises faster time-to-market, reduced costs, and the ability to customize designs, whether youre using AM for rapid prototyping or production. Dont make the mistake of thinking that what worked for traditional production will allow you to get the most from 3-D printing. You must adopt a new mindset and come at common design problems differently. The Constraints Have Changed Without a design for AM mindset, you might think about parts in a familiar way. The result? You limit your own creativity by accepting whats possible using familiar production methods. For example, undercuts, internal channels, even fillet placement matter with traditional manufacturing practice. But they dont hold the same weight when you use 3-D printing technologies. Its understandable that you, especially if youre seasoned, might struggle with such a mindset shift at first. Fortunately, advances in design software can offer various ways to rethink how you approach design problems. We feature three below. Enter the Lattice A lattice is a framework or structure of crossed strips and the resulting spaces between them. An optimized lattice structure promises greater strength with less material, which makes lattices especially useful for such products as lightweight structural panels, energy absorption devices, thermal insulation, or porous implants. When you combine AM with generative design tools, its possible to get an optimized lattice structure you might never have considered. It gets even better: When you add a simulation product thats tightly integrated with your CAD tool, you can test your design as you work before you make a single budget-sapping prototype. Parts are the New Assemblies AM can consolidate many parts into a single component, the implication being that a design for AM mindset means reconsidering how you think about parts and assemblies. In one famous example, GE redesigned its LEAP jet engine nozzle, reducing it from 18 separate components to a single part. GE achieved significant weight reduction and increased performance targets due to the streamlined shape and complex internal lattices. Or consider natures examplethe human hips internal structure. What could you do if you decided to start small with this new mindset? Embrace the Freedom of Generative Design Dont miss out on generative design tools and how they can help you capitalize on your engineering experience and judgement. With the Creo Topology Optimization Extension, you are the one who establishes the defined set of objectives and constraints, while the software determines the best design within the boundaries youve set and delivers B-Rep geometry. When you add the capabilities of AM, chances are that these designs are now within reach. Making the Most of AM Surely this is one of the most exciting times in our careersnew technologies, new goals, new ways of working. All of us are going to be asked to change. While AM technologies present a genuine opportunity, the experience of the seasoned engineer has never been more valuable. Now is the time to put the two together. Air Force Officer Job Descriptions

Air Force Officer Job Descriptions Air Force Officer Job Descriptions To become a commissioned officer in the United States Air Force, one must have a minimum of a bachelors degree. In some fields, such as medical and civil engineering, specialized degrees are required. One can obtain a commission in the United States Air Force by being selected for the Air Force Reserve Officers Training Program (ROTC), by attending the Air Force Academy, or by graduating from Officer Training School (OTS). Below is a list of some of the job descriptions for commissioned officers in various career fields within the Air Force, along with some basic information about what youll need to qualify.   Air Force Pilots There are several different kinds of pilots. To qualify for jobs in this field, airmen need knowledge of flight  theory, air navigation, meteorology, flying directives, aircraft operating procedures, and mission tactics. They need to complete Air Force specialized undergraduate pilot training and undergo a Single Scope Background Investigation. There will be additional training and qualifying factors depending on which specialty the pilot chooses. In addition, they’ll need to complete Officer Training school, the Air Force Academy, or Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps. Pilots need to be between 18 and 28 years old. Air Force Navigator Field Air Force navigators are trained on specific equipment and on specific aircraft. For instance, there are airlift navigators, bomber navigators, fighter plane navigators, and so on. Some navigators are trained in special subcategories, such as reconnaissance or surveillance. An Air Liason Officer needs an aeronautical rating of Pilot, Navigator/Combat Systems Operator, or Air Battle Manager, and must undergo a Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI). Theyll complete officer training school at the Air Force Academy or the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps. Theyll spend nine and a half weeks in training at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama. Air Liaison Officers must be between 18 and 34 years old.   Space, Missile, and Command and Control Space operations manage space flight planning, training, and mission control. They may also be  astronauts or crew members for space flights. Officers are divided into four categories depending on their level of experience: staff, qualified, intermediate, and entry. Space operations officers have a wide variety of duties that include planning and directing space operations programs, developing training for astronauts, planning space stations, and directing launch and recovery activities.   In addition to the usual Air Force Academy officer training school, Space Operations Officers need to complete the Undergraduate Space Training program  and hold a bachelors or masters degree in a science, technology engineering, or math discipline. Theyll spend nine and a half weeks training at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama. Air Force Intelligence Officers Special Tactics Officers, who are part of the Intelligence Field, are highly trained in managing special tactics forces, which include everything from combat search and rescue, to assault zone assessment to weather operations.   They need a bachelors degree, with courses in administration and management and a specialization in a technical discipline. They have to maintain combat-ready status, undergo a Single Scope Background Investigation, and complete officer training school. Like other Air Force officers, Special Tactics Officers spend nine and a half weeks at Maxwell Air Force Base.   Logistics Officers Logistics Readiness Officers ensure that personnel and equipment are prepared and ready to go wherever needed.   These officers need a bachelors degree with a focus in either economics, management, logistics, business administration, computer science, finance, accounting, chemical engineering, or industrial management (there is a wide variety of logistical challenges for the Air Force).   After completing officer training school at the Air Force Academy, Logistics Readiness Officers who are between 18 and 34 will spend nine and a half weeks in training at Maxwell Air Force Base.   Arts and Humanities Officers Public Affairs Officers are one part of this field that includes a variety of different jobs. To be a Public Affairs Officer in the Air Force, youll need good diplomatic and communications skills to serve as a media liaison and a point-of-contact with the general public.   A bachelors degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or a similar field is required, as is a knowledge of the principles and practices of communications. Theyll undergo background and credit checks, and need to have a record clear of substance abuse or unresolved mental health problems.   Also in this field are Band Officers, who oversee enlisted Air Force Band members. A bachelors degree with a focus on instrumental performance or music education is needed, and before becoming a Band Officer, 12 months of experience in the Air Force Band is required. As with any musical career, Band Officers will have to pass a live audition.   Public Affairs Officers and Band Officers complete officer training at the Air Force Academy and nine and a half weeks at Maxwell Air Force base. They need to be between 18 and 34 years old.   Health and Medicine Officers in the Air Force Whether you want to be a surgeon, a nurse, a physician, a dentist, or specialize in one of these areas, the Air Force has a need for them, with many opportunities available to pursue a medical career. The required training will vary depending on the specific job, but an officer in a medical or health field should expect similar training as they would in a civilian job. For instance, to be a Certified Nurse Midwife in the Air Force, a master’s degree in nurse-midwifery or a master’s degree in nursing and a postgraduate certificate in nurse-midwifery  is required. Candidates should be certified by the American Midwifery Certification Board, and have at least 12 months experience as a registered nurse. Thats all in addition to completing commissioned officer training.   Similarly, a dentist in the Air Force would need a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry (DMD) degree and would need to complete a residency pertaining to their specialty.   Law and Enforcement Officers in the Air Force To be a military law officer, you must have special legal training and expertise in criminal procedures, counterintelligence, and investigative policy. These are not entry-level positions; an Investigations Officer needs to have at least six years of commissioned service, and a Judge Advocate Officer needs a law degree such as a Juris Doctor (JD) or Bachelor of Laws.   Future Technologies Field These are the cool jobs of the future, all of which have a heavy focus on technology. One officer track in this field is the Physicist and Nuclear Engineer, who are advanced scientists managing programs and projects of technical operations and intelligence.   As one might expect from the job description, a bachelors or masters degree is required in a field such as engineering physics, nuclear engineering, astronomy, and astrophysics or physics, in addition to completing officer training school at the Air Force Academy. The Air Force updates the jobs and requirements for its professional careers all the time. For the most up-to-date information, visit their careers website to find out if they have something that will match your interests.

The meaningful relationships you build help you navigate uncomfortable job situations, negotiate the right job offers, and gain access to other smart and interesting professionals in your field. Here are a few networking mistakes you may be making and tips on how to improve.1. You’re waiting to build your network until you need itThe biggest mistake in networking is not starting early enough. Many people wait to build a network until they’re looking for a new job, exploring a career change, or have a specific professional need. You may find someone willing to pass on your resume or provide a bit of advice on short notice. But these relationships will generally be short-lived since they’re based on one specific n eed instead of shared values, goals, and interests.A powerful network is made up of people that help support and connect each other. These relationships should start long before you need something. Start early, be proactive, and make networking part of your daily routine. Not sure where to start? Use a networking app such as Shapr to connect with professionals in your area who share common interests. Look on LinkedIn for people with interesting jobs who went to the same college as you. Volunteer for a charity that excites you and ask some of the other volunteers to lunch.2. You’re asking too much or too littleEvery coffee should end with one specific ask - but without asking for too much at once.Instead of: Can you connect me with [NAME]?Ask: Thanks for providing your valuable insight on this topic. Would you be open to connecting me with one other person who can provide an additional perspective on what we’ve discussed?Instead of: Can you submit my resume for that job?Ask: Than ks for sharing your insight into my career trajectory. I’m interested in one of the roles I saw posted on the job board. Do you have any additional ideas for the best way to get prepared if I am invited to interview when I submit my application? By keeping your request small and specific, you leave a window of opportunity for your contact to help out in a larger way without demanding or expecting too much from someone you’ve just met.3. You’re avoiding people who share your job titleWhile mentors are great, some of the best ideas come from talking with other professionals in your field who share the same daily obstacles as you do.Be open to meeting other people at the same place in their careers, and discuss the challenges you face. It will feel good to get ideas from someone trying to tackle similar assignments, and you may even find a regular happy hour friend for celebrating professional wins and getting through hard weeks.4. You’re not prepared for a conversationWhen you meet up with someone new, you should have already done your homework. You don’t have to memorize someone’s resume, but you should glance over their LinkedIn profile and know a little about that person’s background.Do a quick Google search to see what comes up. You may discover that the person you’re meeting runs a blog on the side about a hobby that also interests you. The more common ground you discover, the more topics you will have to break the ice and help the conversation flow.5. Your follow up is about youIf your thank you email after meeting someone new just says, “Thank you for your time,” you’re doing it wrong. While this email is polite and courteous, see how you can further the relationship by adding value for the recipient.Did you mention an article in the context of your conversation? Find the link and pass it along. Did this person mention he or she was looking for a good place to eat in a specific neighborhood? Make a recommendation. By making the email about the recipient, you build the foundation for a mutually beneficial, long-term relationship. Pro tip: we have all the networking lingo already spelled out for you, and you can download it for free.6. You haven’t kept in touch with your existi ng networkWhile you should place an emphasis on continually meeting new people and expanding your network, you should also not forget the people who already provided advice, support, and funny insight along the way.An easy way to connect with your existing network is through social media. Get a Twitter or LinkedIn account and engage with the content your contacts post. Comment on thoughtful articles they share, and follow up with a quick email to pass along related articles you spot.Want to win extra brownie points with your network? Host a brunch or happy hour and invite a few people to join who you haven’t seen in months. Your contacts will remember your generosity in connecting them to new people, and will think of you the next time a great opportunity comes their way.Mandy Menaker is the Head of PR and Brand Development at Shapr, a networking app for meeting inspiring professionals near you. 11 Tips for Crafting a Freelancer Resume

11 Tips for Crafting a Freelancer Resume 11 Tips for Crafting a Freelancer Resume As a freelancer or consultant, crafting a strong resume is important. This is because many freelancers/consultants will have many jobs, but for shorter spans of time. However, it can be tricky to create a resume  when gigs last for a short amount of time.Below are 11 tips to consider when crafting a resume as a freelancer or consultant. 01 Follow traditional resume writing rules. svetikd/Getty Images This is a simple tip. Just because you don’t have a traditional employment background doesn’t mean your resume needs to be a never-seen-before creative display.Avoid writing in the first person. Traditional resume formatting is the third person. A resume is not about you as a person, it’s about your skills helping a company.Hiring managers need to know what they are looking at. If you’re a creative, don’t follow design principles that take away from clarity.Any good designer will tell you: a design that makes a product hard to use or understand is a bad one. 02 Consider using a skills-based resume format.Rather than creating a chronological resume, you can create a resume that showcases your skills. Those hiring freelancers are looking to solve projects with a person’s specific skills and abilities. 03 Customize your resume to fit the job you want.Recruiters and hiring managers often sift through hundreds of resumes to fill a single position. One way to be excluded from the final round is to have a resume that is general and does not acknowledge the companys needs. To gain attention, make sure that your resume includes experience and skills that are relevant to what the job requires. 04 Include any relevant education or courses.Include any relevant degrees, courses or certifications that you have completed.Important note: there is no reason to include your GPA if the job that you’re applying for isn’t your first one.Unless, of course, your GPA is very impressive (definitely if it’s perfect). 05 Quantify your achievements as much as possible.Potential employers like to see that your work produced a measurable result; so try to include statistics where possible. This can be more difficult to show when working with a wide range of companies/clients.An example would be:“Homepage redesign lead to a 25% increase in conversion rates”However, you don’t need to list every project you’ve ever worked on that saw results. Instead, be selective.  Only showcase your most impressive work.   06 Include links to your website and online profiles. It may not be necessary to include every social media network you are active on.Nonetheless, every freelancer should include their website, LinkedIn, and any industry-specific profiles that they have (such as Dribble or Github). 07 Always include keywords in your resume.Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is an important component of most things we do online, and your resume is no exception.Nowadays, many companies use automated software that screens submitted resumes and searches for relevant keywords. It is always best practice to include keywords from the job description in your resume. If the job listing is vague, use key terms that you think the job would require. 08 Dont be a cookie-cutter: include you on your resume. Most forward-thinking companies (the kind you want to work for) are looking for people who fit not only the job listing but also the company culture.Add any information that you think could be relevant to the given position, including:Information about your side businessYour personal art portfolioThe eBook that you wrote 09 Dont be modest. If you’ve worked with major companies or big clients, mention them in your resume. (Unless you’ve signed some kind of Non-Disclosure Agreement specifying otherwise.)Hiring managers love to see reputable and recognizable names. It demonstrates that you can provide a level of service that major clients expect. Also, when applying for positions, your resume (and cover letter) is your opportunity to shine. Don’t be afraid to show off your talents.Being too humble or modest will not convey confidence in your own work. 10 Remember: recruiters spend very little time reading your resume. For this reason, design your resume so that it has a clear visual hierarchy: use clear headings and keep descriptions short.Recruiters make a decision on your resume within six seconds. Make sure they have a reason to go over it in detail with a good visual design and by using short, strong job descriptions. 11 Include a call to action (CTA).Never assume that hiring managers will look at any of the resources that you provide.Include a request in your resume to view your website, check your references, or ask for more information if they need it. (Whichever is the most important given the circumstance: never have multiple CTAs.) Conclusion Crafting a powerful resume is key when it comes to landing those desirable jobs. So the next time you're applying to a position full-time or part-time make sure to incorporate these 11 tips for a standout resume.
